LA CONCHA HOTEL PROJECT
Installed December 2007
Location: La Concha Hotel, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The designer/decorator, Jorge Rosello and I had worked on many hotel projects, among them, El San Juan Hotel, Pierre Hotel, Condado Plaza Hotel, all in San Juan, and the Swissotel in Chicago.

The name of this art installation is "Amanece", which literally means "dawn comes", and it is the name of a very important song in the musical history of Puerto Rico. It describes the hills and valleys at dawn and the villagers taking their crops to the towns to sell. Their voices, which echo through the hillside, sing a chorus that is uniquely Puerto Rican......... ay, le-lo-lay, le-lo, le-lo-lay.

My installation consisted of 8 glass cases, each with 3 rows of hanging silk pieces, in different colors and sizes to form an overall pattern.

To give an example of the work involved, more than 6500 individual 'slices' of silk were hand-painted according to a graphed pattern. Then eight pieces were sewn into a strand, following this pattern.

Thus, when each of the three rods in each case held 28 strands, multiplied by the eight cases, the numbers really added up to a lot of work!

Each piece of silk was sewn by hand to the last piece.

The work took more than two years and the installation six days, with the help of many people, especially friends and family.

Thank you all!
